Our aim is to offer leadership in York Region on the issue of gender-based violence (GBV). We aspire to increase awareness on the complexity of GBV and foster a thriving response model to meet the needs of women and children in our community. Our committee is comprised of a wide range of service organizations, community members and survivors.
The York Region Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee (YRVAWCC) was established in 1997. The Ontario Women’s Directorate, now known as Ministry of the Status of Women, wrote a report titled the Framework for Action on the Prevention of Violence Against Women in Ontario (McGuire Report) which lead to this development.
The YRVAWCC is a feminist committee that promotes a gender-based analysis of violence against women. It works within a intersectional, anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework.
Our values include:
Current Strategic Plan from 2014-2017:
Awareness: To be seen as experts on issues of gender-based violence against women in order to raise community and service provider awareness.
Partnerships: To develop innovative partnerships that allow us to achieve our mission.
The Governance Committee was established by the York Region Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee in September 2014 to oversee and monitor the committee’s corporate governance policies, practices and guidelines to ensure the effectiveness and continued development of the overall committee functions and processes in the spirit of YRVAWCC’s mission and in accordance with the governance structure approved by the YRVAWCC members.
Public Education Awareness Committee
The Public Awareness and Education Committee was established by the York Region Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee in September 2014 to generate and execute public awareness and education initiatives to engage the York Region community with regard to VAW issues and in accordance with YRVAWCC’s mission. It is this committee’s goal to be seen as experts on issues of gender based violence against women in order to raise community and service provider awareness and it is in the strengthening of the YRVAWCC’s relationship with the York Region community that YRVAWCC seeks to increase advocacy-oriented initiatives with the hopes of creating a more informed and responsive community on VAW issues and its effects.
Partnerships and Training Committee
The Partnerships and Training Committee was established by the York Region Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee September 2014 as part of its strategic directions relating to partnerships (including the partnerships mandate). The Partnerships and Training Committee will ensure all goals and work are aligned with the YRVAWCC’s 3 Year Strategic Plan with a specific emphasis on nurturing current partnerships and developing novel relationships with multiple stakeholders to create a holistic multi-sectoral response to violence against women issues within York Region.
Community of Women Advisory Committee
The Community of Women Advisory Committee (CWAC) was established by the York Region Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee as part of a Trillium grant in order to involve women with lived experience of abuse in the work of the Coordinating Committee.
CWAC supports people who have experienced abuse, as well as the community in which they live, by identifying needs and creating tools that will help educate the public so that together we can all become beacons of hope, strength and support for those who need it in their journey toward a violence free world.
