Agency: Abuse Hurts
Abuse Hurts assists thousands of women and children every year and works with many agencies such as shelters, Children’s Aid, Victim’s Services, Police, and many other agencies working with abused women and children.
This program is called Delivering Hope and consists of product distribution of clothing, household items, bedding, toiletries, and other items that a woman may need to start over. The items are all donated, and the program is managed mostly by volunteers.
Many times a woman comes in to get a coffee pot, and leaves with so many items that she didn’t realize we had. So many women leave with the clothes on their backs, so even some simple things such as dishes etc. is a huge help.
Once or twice a month we provide a “Makeover Day” where 8-12 women from various shelters and agencies get a complete make-over with professional hair stylists and make-up artists. These ladies then go “shopping” (for free) in our showroom of brand new and very gently used clothing for new outfits which also includes shoes, a purse, and a grab bag full of cosmetics. The common element of all our Delivering Hope days, is no matter where the group of recipients are from, there is laughter – lots of laughter.
Women whose lives have been affected by abuse need a fresh start. Many have never had careers or positive role models that can guide or help them to integrate into the workplace. Many times, it is just a day away from their difficult lives, and for a day they just get pampered.
